Does the world need open-source search tools? The people at Wikipedia think so.
The folks behind the public encyclopedia have launched Wikia, a project to develop a search engine, crawlers and other indexing tools through a collaborative, open-source process.

I think they will do well

But the fact remains that the google search engine is so well developed, that competing with it is nearly impossible. Although not their direct goal obviously, one cannot deny Google's supremacy on the search-engine front.

Cool project though!

I really do not see any new engine upstanding the established top 3, well, not for many years to come anyway.
