Why are domain registration fees going up?

Because they can ... I can't see the base price of .com/net not being increased every year by VNDS when they're allowed to do it.

I guess we should all follow Nominet if we don't want the price rises and buy .*.uk since "72% of users are more likely to choose a .uk rather than a .com address when looking for information online"

I would believe that it may be because alot of the domain names are being taken up quite fast but i cannot see this as a good reason since they could just make new prefixes.

I would take a look at a few hosting and domain companies before i would purchase a domain name.

All the domains are taken really, but that means they do have more value the already registered ones.

If you go and buy a domain from someone else, theres no reason why its then worthless, it can be a good investment.

With regards to other tld's, there are a lot coming out and there is good talk of letting anyone soon register any tld they want, like .mycom for example or .host , however i think its going to be a $50,000 reg fee for your own TLD! So that may just be for companies then ;) (or people with too much money who should be giving some to me instead)

Agreed, i like the idea of registration of own tld's.
There would be alot of strange ones if the people with lots of money had their own.

I still think that they should have allowed the .xxx domain for porn sites.
