keyword planner is a great place to start. You might begin with moderately searched keywords and avoid phrases they do not get traffic. If you are able to attain good results for those keywords, you can try the more competitive phrases. Its important to focus on phrases you can actually attain. It does no good of course, to vie for the most competitive phrases if you don't show up in the results. You then go to less competitive phrases, while building pages, content and links to support more competitive ones.

The more content you have on your site, the more likely you will show up in results for long tailed keywords.
