What is the difference between marketing and sales? Characteristics and specifications?

Many people can not distinguish between marketing and sales and between the seller and the marketer, both of them have characteristics, specifications and tasks ... It is true that they converge, but in each of them what distinguishes and differentiate them from the other The questions are for discussion and clarification
 
Hi Housestar,

To answer your question about sales and marketing in details will be pages long.

But in brief overview.

Marketing job is to
- identify the market opportunity to target (Eg: Whats trending now?)
- opening market (Eg: Viral advertising, Making products trending)
- Brainstorming and Strategising how one product could be big in the market.
- Branding to ensure market knows the brand and products.

Sales job is to
- Sales of course (Eg: close deals)
- Usually, operates around targets and quotas to meet.
- Sales skill being used includes sales pitch, conversation tactics, cold calling and such.

Well thats ricght but its also conected between them .For example a marketar must be a sales man also to sell .And a seller man must know a little marketing to attract his clients
 
@alexsmith84 Yeap took me awhile to realise that too back then. Went in the direction of sales job while knowing my passion is marketing and ending up feeling very2 odd in the job ;)

@thelegend one thing that we could agree at for marketing and sales are both of them need to know the product they are promoting extremely well :)
