What is Reverse SEO?

Hi,
Reverse SEO is the process of removing (technically de-ranking) websites other than your own from the first pages of Google.
Reverse SEO has become one of the most effective strategies for minimizing the impact of bad publicity within the search engines’ organic listings. It is an online reputation management (ORM) tool of SEO consultants who manage Online Reputation Management. Too often, companies become targets for negative press online.

Angered customers start blogs to take businesses to task for grievances suffered, real or imagined. Dishonest competitors will often go to great lengths to distribute fraudulent reports online. The problem is that these blogs, pages, and reports can begin ranking well in Google and Yahoo.

Okay, did you guys call each other and decide to post the exact same thing?

You won’t really know when one of your employees or high-level staff will do something stupid. You won’t really know if or when your product will fail. You won’t really know if an unreasonable, irate customer will walk in your door. You won’t really know if that customer knows how to do SEO. You won’t really know when you’re gonna get a bad reputation in the search engines. What you need to know is what to do when this happens.

Reverse Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a technique used in online reputation management to suppress negative results on Google Search and other search engines.

Reverse SEO involves using regular Search Engine Optimization techniques on web pages ranking (directly) underneath a negative search result. Doing normal, white-hat SEO on for web pages appearing under a negative result will improve the search rankings of those web pages, causing them to move above the negative result and thereby displacing the negative item from the first page and suppressing it far back on SERPs so that (virtually) nobody searching the name of your business will see it.

Typically when someone says "reverse SEO" they are talking about un-ranking or removing content from search engine results.

Mainly this is done in the context of trying to suppress negative information about a person or business.

It's useful for hiding information that might be damaging to a person/business, such as a bad review, negative press, or whatever else.

A common example of a reverse SEO use case would be the website ripoffreport, which is a website where consumers / haters can post negative information about something.

Usually reverse SEO can be done though two main tactics:

1) Creating positive branded content. Most people won't look past page one or two of Google. If you can create 20 strong web properties that rank for the name/brand in question, you can potentially push negative content too deep for most casual researchers.

2) Actually removing negative content. This is often not possible especially in cases where the complaint is actually real. There is no standard way to remove, for example, a bad news story from Google. If there were, obviously there'd be no negative news on Google. However, sometimes you can pay to have bad press deleted - ripoffreport for example I've heard will take cash. Other times you may have a legal avenue, such as in cases of revenge porn. Less ethical options for removing content, such as hacking negative websites, also exist.

It's a pretty ugly space overall - since you're usually torn between either dealing with extortionate webmasters, or else trying to suppress something actually negative, which is probably unethical.

It's also an area loaded with false promises from various agencies, since removing negative content from Google is often not really possible.
