    There're 2 TYPES OF TLD
    • gTLD is Generic Top-level Domains. We have 2 types of gTLD
      • unSponsored gTLDs (such as: .com, .net, .org, .name).
      • sponsored gTLDs (such as: .shop, .mobi, .jobs, .travel). Some new gTLDs (such as nTLD: .fun, .web, .link, .club, .click).
    • ccTLD is Country code top-level domains such as: .io, .in, .me, .co, .de,…

Domain extensions, also known as Top Level Domains or TLDs, are the suffixes or the last part of a domain name - the letters that come after the dot to the right of any domain name. For example, most URL addresses end with .com - this is an example of a domain extension or TLD

  15. Domain extension refers to the notation found at the end of web addresses. The extension is used to specify a country code or any web category. For example, .edu is a domain extension to specify educational institution as the web category.

You mean the name 'string' allocated by ICANN to a Registry.
    .this or .that

A Registry is sanctioned to sell domain names in the name string allocated to it by ICANN.

Registrars have contracts to sell the rights to use the Registry's domain names to the public >>>myname.this

You buy a domain name from a Registrar by the year and renew as required.
You only own the personal property rights to a domain name so long as you pay for the registration term.

You only own the legal tender rights ( the use in commerce) in your government currency -- the government owns the paper (physical goods).

You only own a leasehold right in an apartment you lease for a year and only conditioned upon your payments of the rent called for by the lease and adherence to the lease's other terms <<< you pay for equitable use -- domain names work the same way basically.
