What are the main things to do to get you near the top on google places.

I have been reading a few articles about google places but not found anything that says what are the best thing to do to get you towards the top of the listings. There were a couple of thing i wondered.
Do google+ reviews help?
do Good keywords in your description on places help,
sorry for my lack of knowledge.
