I get the general idea of affiliate marketing... I think. I'm just not understanding how to generate traffic to my website and/or blog. I can't afford to spend a fortune on traffic generators.

1. Provide content that people want to read.
2. Optimize your site for search terms people would actually use to find a site like yours.
3. Use page titles and page description meta tags that include those search terms and match the content of the page.
4. Don't create spammy looking pages.
5. Avoid popups, pop-unders, and any form of audio that starts without the visitor clicking on a play button.
6. Inform your visitors. Don't annoy them or hijack their browsers.

amonroe1011,
Follow exactly the process that minstrel left, and you may want to read as many post as you can about SEO, PPC, Social marketing and many other things from this forum.

you may also want to go look at a lot of top bloggers, learn from them, the styles they use, the wording, how they lay their pages out and a host of other things. copyblogger is an example of a top blog, tech crunch is another, I am pretty sure others could add to this list for you to check out and study.

My grandfather used to tell me that the will to win means nothing, but that the will to prepare to win means everything. one of our founding Fathers here was asked a question once, and that is "What would you do if you had 12 hours to cut a large tree down, how would you do it?" His reply was "I would spend the first 11 hours sharpening the axe."

Now, I am not stating to get info paralysis, I am stating to learn the basics before you leap, and this will keep you ahead of the pack.

Thanks guys. I have my own site, but even if I google the site name exactly it doesn't appear. I'm trying to get the hang of this. Right now I'm just running cheap ads on other forum sites that relate to the product until I get my site where I want it.

Just come up with interesting content that is engage your target market, that's the essential. And there are a lot of way to promote on the budget - constantly change meta tags and track response of audience to those changes. Press releases are free (a lot of them). Blogs, article spinning, gather emails for future newsletter...

Changing meta tags isn't going to do anything. Human visitors won't see them and search engines, for the most part, ignore them.

It is easy to get overwhelmed, so let me simplify it for you.

Step 1 - Optimize your site. So if you want to get known for acne treatments, you want your site to be about acne treatments. Don't throw in dog training tips. Keep it relevant. Write articles about your topic and include your keywords within the articles. Use tags. I use "All in One SEO' for each of my posts. It is a free plug in. Internally link your articles also. So if you have an article on acne cream, you can link to another page where you have a product you are recommending.

Step 2- Get backlinks. There are many ways to get backlinks. I recommend, using "social proof" i.e. twitter, facebook, social bookmarking, submitting your RSS feed, article directories, web2.0 sites etc. There are so many ways you can really pick and choose. For example, if you enjoy making videos, you could get backlinks with your videos. If you like writing, you can do press releases. You just want diversity in your backlinking campaign. You also want to build links in a natural manner, don't blast your site with tons of links.

If you need more help, just give a shout out.
