Yes its possible but SEO is a very slow channel and its hard to measure the impact of your actions. The big advantage of paid traffic is its immediate impact, the immense possibilities to scale up and of course the fact you can precisily measure its impact on ROI

Yes, SEO is possible for a single page website. How much effect it will have is difficult to tell though, and your page may still be low ranked in search engines if its a new page with not much traffic. The basic steps are the same for a single page website as any other. Use keywords carefully in the text, title, and subtitle, so you don't overload them, and use combinations that make it clear what your site is about, and try to get backlinks from relevant and respected sites in the same area.

If you are working with the HTML, then metatags or schema might help. Google doesn't officially use metatags, but other search engines still may, so they might be worth adding. You can also use a schema (see schema.org) to make your page stand out in search result lists and look better to the search engine's bot.

One problem you might have is that if people aren't staying very long on it, you might get dinged for "bounces" more than a multi-page site. As a single page website, there is nowhere else on the site for them to go, so all your users are going to go somewhere else after visiting.

It use to be said content is king, so one single webpage might not do it. Sure its slow and hard to measure.
It´s still possible, but success also depends on which niche you are in.

Content is king yes, but links are emperor. :D
Seriously, it depends on a lot of factor (in first the competition) but it's completely possible.

However, I advise you to go for a strict minimum of 1-2k words on this page targeting your primary keywords of course but also a maximum of long tail keywords and cooccurrences.
Be sure to work on the diversity of your content (images, videos).
Adding pages like "Terms and conditions" "About" are also a good move if you can to add more credibility and trust.

Finally, the most important thing to consider is the links.
It could be an entire course on its own but always look at the Trust Flow (Majestic metric) of the pages you want to appear on, the more the better.
Of course, a natural link profile is as diverse as possible, both in terms of quality and sources but it's a great indicator to start with.

Feel free to ask more specific questions.

Good luck my friend ! ;)

It depends on how unique your content is.
Even if it is narrow or specialized interest < best -- low SEO competition IMHO.
The lack of page depth may be a liability.

With good content, keywords, it's possible to rank for single page even higher than the homepage.
