Questions to Consider When Doing Market Research?

As we all must come to know, sooner or later, that the most important element in marketing
is the customer
so we must always anticipate their every move to better serve them.

After all, why else do businesses exist?

Anyway...

Here are some questions I like to run through my mind when doing research work, if you get
this down you will improve your rate of productivity so much so that it becomes almost natural
to think this way and come up with creative angles for whatever campaigns you are building:

In no particular order,

  1. Who is most likely to make purchases on the internet?
  2. Is the market growing?
  3. What is their country of origin?
  4. What gender spends the most money online?
  5. How much do they usually spend money online?
  6. What age group do they fall under?
  7. What do they do for a living?
  8. What social class do they belong to?
  9. What is their marital status?
  10. Do they have children?
  11. Do they own a house and/or cars?
  12. Where do they hangout online?
  13. How much time do they spend online?
  14. What time of day are they most likely to be online?
  15. Do they have any time restrictions?
  16. Where do they access the internet from?
  17. Do they use a computer, laptop or mobile device?
  18. What types of content do they consume?
  19. What television programmes do they watch?
  20. What magazines do they subscribe to?
  21. What newspapers do they read?
  22. What television commercials are they exposed to?
  23. What other web content do they consume online?
  24. What popular social networking sites do they use?
  25. What search engines do they use?
  26. What are their interests and hobbies?
  27. Do they belong to any social clubs?

The way I look at it is to start thinking more about people and their environmental influences.

There is more questions to ask and this sure isn't all of it...

So tell me...

What questions do you ask?
What process do you use when doing research work?

I'd like to hear your thoughts...

Very good questions to get to know your target audience, mister williams!

I once watched a Frank Kern seminar about this topic. He said that he sits down and writes out a complete description of his targets, right down to the kind of clothes they wear. It seems to work wonderfully well for him, so your post contains some good advice, I think.

If you know a group of people well enough, you can understand their problems and desires, so you can present your offers from a suitable (and enticing :)) angle.

That's it. Especially when you have some things in common with said demographic.
The people who dress like yourself probably identifies with the same sub culture and the
values.

What do the trendy, inner city hipster kids have in common?

Your question made me think that it is probably easiest to walk in our potential target's shoes, so to speak, if we stick to groups of people that we have some insight to. From past experience or people who we know/have known. If we are trying to appeal to foreign sub cultures, how good a job can we do? By foreign, I mean foreign to us, not referring to other countries.

Great list of questions! This is also a great way to discover new traffic sources for a niche. I will subscribe to this thread and keep it as a reference,
