You're right it is almost certainly a graphics card problem. You may see some errors in the system event log for it.

Failing that, I think I would buy the cheapest GC (about £30) just to confirm that is the problem.

If your running two montiors it might not automaticly default to the one you want. Failing that re-installing all drivers with latest can hurt.
