I am confused! How website without backlinks is in Google 1st Page?

Hi, I was today checking the number of backlinks for the websites with great rankings in google using a backlink checker tool. I used this one

I was focusing on the keyword 'Free Report'

I Checked backlinks for First Four Websites.

1. annualcreaditreport.com - It deserve to be on first position having great number of backlinks.

2. freereport.sourceforge.net - This amazed me! it is not having many backlinks.

3. freecreditreport.com - It is also having good backlinks.

4. howsmycredit.com - VERY LOW!

How, it is possible for the websites at Number Two and Four to be at this position WITHOUT having too much backlinks it is almost NIL. There are so many websites under these ones and having very much number of backlinks.

Can you please clear it? Does it mean, backlinks are having no connection with google ranking.

Its possible. Number of links is nothing compare on the quality backlinks.

I think due to there quality keywords and usage of its keywords makes it to the 1st page. You may see Bayut.com is on the 1st page of uae property

Yes quality of links is an issue, also the ones below what you've listed are probably less relevant to your search even if they have a million backlinks.

Google decides SERPs positions based on a whole variety of factors and backlinks are one of those.

However, as mentioned the quality of the backlink in terms of the topical nature of the page it sits, the quality of the page it sits, the number of other links on the page it sits, the keywords in the anchor text, all influence the value of the link.

Not only that but all the other on-page factors such as domain age, site technical quality, text in headings, alt texts, page titles and descriptions, sitemaps, image names etc etc also influence SERPs for a particular search phrase.

Then you have Google's SERPs page related factors such as click through rates. Not to mention any other data they can get hold of such as bounce rates, page views, time spent on pages, unique/returning visitors etc in Analytics or information in Google Webmaster Tools.

Basically, if you can think of a way of rating a page based on some piece of information Google can see, then you can be pretty sure Google are already doing it to some extent.

Be sure to make quality backlinks which is prefered by most search engines, you gain backlinks by using linking to other sites by this way you will want to use your keywords as your anchor text which will also help you increse your rankings in SERP but that doesn't necessarily mean SERPs will rely on anchor text. A SourceForge site being second for that term is not surprising because they are a HUGE site on the net and by creating a new page or section they could rank well for lots of things.

Why are you interested in 'free report'? Do you plan to offer free reports on every single thing in the world? Surely you want to be a bit more specific, like 'free credit report' for example.

According to me, it is not good for you and for your site to use Black Hat techniques as this can rank you but also cause a big damage to your site.

So, it is better to go for ethical techniques to your site as it will very preety soon increases the rankings of your site.

Google doesn't show all the details and informations on the number of back links that you are getting. They must be having a pretty good content there.

This could be because two of the websites have good back links but lower SEO optimisation or SEO errors while the other two have better SEO and more relevant content. Also the number of visitors to the site will count and those with less back links could have higher traffic. There are around 200 factors that lead to high positions an no one is important enough entirely on its own.
