Have You Upgraded to Windows 10 Yet?

Windows 10.jpg

I started off upgrading just one laptop this past weekend, figuring if I ran into problems it was not essential and any downtime would be inconvenient but not mission critical.

However, the upgrade went so smoothly that I went back the next day and upgraded my desktop and my wife's laptop.

There were a few glitches... On the first laptop, Outlook stopped working with an error message to the effect that I didn't have permission to access the Outlook mailstore. I fixed that (a permissions issue) fairly quickly. I think the cause was that for the first upgrade, my laptop, it was a password protected laptop and Windows 10 encouraged me to switch that login in to my Microsoft login. I didn't have that problem on the desktop or the other laptop because they weren't password protected to begin with and I ignored the Windows 10 recommendation to use my Microsoft login.

On the desktop, Outlook has twice silently refused to open links in Firefox. That's another quick fix too... apparently this is a glitch that plagued some Windows 8.x installations as well and there is a Microsoft Fix-It that will automatically fix the issue for you using some registry entry repairs. It does require a reboot and in the process sets the default browser back to Windows Edge but that too is easily fixed by loading Firefox and responding yes to the query to make it my default browser.

Yesterday, there was an automatic update from Windows 10 fixing various bugs, although I don't know specifically what they were.

Overall, though, despite the little glitches, I have to say this was an easy upgrade.

If you have already upgraded, what was your experience?

The big question is.... do you like using the new version?

I am still on version 7. Just keep hearing how different newer versions are, and hard to find your way around it. Why I have not moved up yet.

I have now upgraded a desktop and three laptops. I replaced the Windows 10 start button with Start10 o I have a full Windows 7 style start menu again.

I love Windows 10. It is faster. It boots and reboots faster. It manages resources better. I can go days without rebooting now and that's with Outlook, 6 Firefox windows each with multiple tabs open at all times, and various graphics and web coding programs open pretty much at all times. I couldn't go more than 2-3 days max with Windows 7 the way I work.

Personally, I think 10 is the best version of Windows ever.

hhmm.. now you have me thinking. I don't usually have to reboot the entire system that much, except for Firefox. Some times once a day Firefox need to be restarted. Actually stopped using IE a week or so ago, was getting so bad.

just a big change... lol

It's not really. Install Start10 for $4.99 USD and basically you have a faster and more efficient version of Windows 7.

And if you are already suffering with Windows 8, you will see a huge improvement even without Start10.

Well, there I go. That was a the big thing I was hearing, it was TOO different. Just from 7 to 8. So this Start10 makes it like 7 huh? Well, with the start menu we know and love :)

Thanks for the info. And I think upgrade to 10 is pretty cheap these days? If I remember correctly.

Actually I've noticed the upgrade Icon has been in my tray for a while now. I click it and it says FREE. hhmm... make me nervous though. Always wonder if all my programs will work with it.

Upgrading from any version of Windows to Windows 10 is free now until July 2016. The update software will run a check to make sure your hardware is supported by most Win 7 or Win 8 machines will be fine.

After the install, you have 30 days to easily revert back to your earlier version of Windows if you are unhappy.
