Google used to give lot of weightage to on-page optimization, but these days it seems to be shifting its focus towards Good Content. If your website is optimized then it can work as an icing on the cake, but you need to have good and popular content on your website.

Directory link building is almost dead these days and many are scrambling hard to get their websites listed on the top.

However, you can use these techniques :dance2:

a) Forum Promotion
b) Free Press Release Promotion
c) Article Promotion
d) Social Bookmarking
e) Social Media Optimization
f) Building popular content (ie viral content)
g) RSS Promotion

These are some of the techniques which can result in higher rankings as compared to directory submissions :search:

i think article and press release are the mose time consuming in all the list but really give a great help in rankings :D

I don't think press release sites can help much in getting better PR. Article directories are much effective than press release sites as they are free anyone can submit to it. whereas most of the press release sites are paid so you need to do some investment in it do get something out of it.

classified ad posting, directory submission. They should be included in the list too.But again content is the king..

Good content usually means unique well-written content which is encompassed in ONpage SEO along with Meta data: titles/descrip/tags so Google does favor these things along with Offpage, backlinks with the appropriate anchor text to increase your SERPS and PR.

Effectivly anything that puts your site url's onto other sites enhances your chances of your URL being a hit on google!

Always remember to submit your URL to relevant sites to have higher chances of getting into top rankings.. Quality and best compared to quantity..
