For SEO ranking is a .co.uk or .com domain best for a UK site?

Hi, I’m no stranger to IT with 25 yrs experience as a Certified Software Engineer but am new to SEO.

I live in the UK and am planning to set up an affiliate niche site aimed at a UK audience.

Obviously SEO has many facets and twists and turns. However in order to maximise my chances of a good ranking for my site am I better off registering a .co.uk domain or a .com domain?

If this affiliate site targets only UK users then it should go with .CO.UK domain to make promotion, local presence and SEO ranking. It targets global audience then it should go with .COM domain.
