Could AI search reduce affiliate SEO traffic?

AI answers may hit informational SEO traffic first. Domain and hosting content is a clear example: DNS, WHOIS, SSL, transfers, email setup.

If users get the answer directly, fewer clicks may go to guides and affiliate pages.

Is GEO becoming something affiliate site owners need to care about?

Yes, I think affiliate site owners should care about it, but I wouldn’t treat GEO as a completely separate game from SEO.

The biggest risk is for basic informational content. Simple guides like “what is DNS”, “what is WHOIS” or “how to set up SSL” are exactly the type of queries AI can answer directly, so those pages may lose clicks first.

For affiliate sites, the solution is not just to write more generic guides. I’d focus more on content that helps users make decisions: comparisons, use cases, pricing breakdowns, pros and cons, migration experiences, real testing, troubleshooting, and product recommendations.

AI can summarize basic information, but it still needs sources, examples, experience and authority. So the goal should be to become a source worth referencing, not just another site repeating the same definitions.

In my opinion, GEO is basically SEO + brand authority + better content structure. Clear answers, original insights, strong topical coverage, internal linking, schema, and real experience will matter more. Thin informational content will probably become less valuable, while useful decision-making content should still perform well.

GEO is quickly becoming part of the SEO playbook. Generic guides are easy for AI to summarize, but original research, real examples and firsthand experience still give users a reason to visit the source.

IDK ... 12-15 years ago it mattered to me--back in dinosaur times ...

You would have to use a clean Google account; made with that GEO's IP and the normal (obfuscated) browser profile used in that GEO--then do some search researching to get any empirical proof that CC TLDs are of any real SEO value today.
