I'm all for jumping in and making tons of mistakes, that was my method when I first started and it worked out fine now. As long as you realize that you can't do it all without research and you eventually start scouring blogs and forums then you will be fine.
Hmm 7 years ago the way to optimize your site was to hide lots of keywords at the bottom of your website by masking the color, I remember those sites ;) Seriously though, business is business and not much changes, just the methods.

By responding to blog posts, forum posts, etc. internet marketers continuously get their name out there. Name recognition is everything in this business and using tools such as blogs they can easily push products. Not to mention Jeremy Shoemaker makes thousands per paid review on his blog.
"data entry" is just an industry term that we use, in reality this means using paid surveys and other methods to make money. You won't make too much money off things such as this, it is typically those promoting these methods that make the bulk of the money there is to be had.

Nofollow blogs are just as good as dofollow blogs if not better when used properly. Nofollow bloggers get far less comments and therefore appreciate high quality comments more, if you continuously make great comments then they might put you permanently on their blog roll.

I would recommend starting a Squidoo for it now, but don't directly compete for things such as the name of your website. I have seen many people get out-ranked by their own Squidoo pages for the name of their domain. I've also out-ranked a few of my merchants before too ;)

The best way is definitely to create a free ebook and then promote it via your blog, forum signatures, articles, etc. It also never hurts to try to contact webmasters and see if they would be willing to include it on their sites or newsletters.
I feel that AWStats provides a more accurate view of your unique visitors, but it also includes spiders. Typically I find that if I add up my Google Analytics visitors + AWstats unique visitors and average them, that I will have a pretty good idea of where I stand since GA misses non-javascript...
