A quality link is a dofollow link on a frequently indexed page with many other sites linking to that page, which does not have many other outbound links on it.
There are niches for which social media will be beneficial, and those for which it will not help at all.
Try starting a Facebook group or fanpage on a herpes treatment, see how many members you get.
Really you should have mentioned something about finding the conversion rates of keywords.
Run a ppc campaign and find the conversion rates of your keywords. THEN work on changing single aspects of your site, split testing them to see how it affects conversion on those keywords.

A 'natural' backlink is one that was created by someone not connected to your site ie/ not for SEO purposes. For instance if you made a really good post about something, and people linked to that post on your site to share the information, those would be natural backlinks.
There are a couple of products out there selling them as well, this one looks pretty good as it is onpage PR, not just domain PR.

Forum links are one part of what should be a varied link profile. Using one link building method will never work. You should be using every legit method you know of.
Quite a common method actually but only works if people are actually searching for your keywords.
Have you checked if anyone searches for that keyphrase?
How do you plan to monetize the traffic?
There is no google search string that will find you only dofollow blogs.
There are search strings that will find you blogs hosted on platforms that are usually dofollow, but you will still have to check manually.

There are some genuine sites I am sure, but they are hidden under hundresd of rip off sites with far more aggressive marketing. So no, leave it be and learn how to build yourself a real business.
Amount of competing sites is not a good indicator of competition. What is important is the backlink count, amount of indexed pages, and PR of the top 10 sites. Those are the ones you have to beat.

A blog post or video which goes viral will get hundreds or thousands of links in a very short amount of time. The same is true for breaking news stories.
