If you are to vote for a web directory as the best web directory on the net, what will you be looking for? List as many attributed of a good web directory as possible.

Thanks

From WD owner's prospective it should be efficient and therefore automatic. But the question is how to do that, so that it collects only "good" links.

The way to do this is to be highly specialised, and once it has a good amount of sites (2000 +) , make it go paid.

Not general in any shape or form
Directory must promote itself beyond the web
Attract millions of visitors and maintain that
Be more than just a directory
Reasonably priced
Able to keep out the spam

but few can claim to do that, although one local directory did achieve this, it was connected to a millionaire involved in 5 other ventures. I don't see any value in webmaster directories, so don't believe there is a 'best directory'.

They only copy each other and set ups are always the same, meaning theres little to measure between them. If I were to stick my neck out, I'd say something like Yell.com or Scoot, but those ideas wont work anymore as their done to death.

Something unique will always get interest and survive longer.

Could you clarify, please

Is it statistical data?

Specialisation is the thing that seperates you from rest. It's the selling point, or part of it. It is about sales, you have to say why you are better than the next website. If do this successfully, then people will buy from you.

Not stats data, but based on my many years experience in the publishing industry and sales profession.

All websites need content, and directories exist on their information, so it needs lots of that for searchers. People look for information.

When have enough info, it will attract the searchers - get enough searchers and you have something to sell!

Here's my list:

1. It should be free for regular link submission
2. Web directory should be moderated to ensure that the sites to be listed are relevant to its category..
3. It has fast approval.
4. Links have "dofollow" value.
5. It also accepts deep links.

it should be high in PR, free, can accept deep links, and index your submission in 2-3 days or faster, that's what i'm looking for a directory :D

all these things you can get in a 0PR directory. I have never come across any directory that has a good PR more than 3 and accepts links in just 2-3 business days.

There are a few about, but not many. All directories that had good PR got penalized badly, but we all know why that is and its their own fault for selling PR. Directories are dead, despite what owners say and its bcos their in denial.

Nobody searches them, people want targeted and local search, all these clones cant even get that right, never mind do local - god, Google cant even do local search, so what chance has the rest got.

The publishing industry is a tough, tough game and watch many more shut down. The big companies won it years ago, and that ended any chance of webmaster clones achieving any minor success.

Many survived on sales of PR, bcos other directories basically traded it or bought it. Thinking was if they got high PR. they could sell that to the next one - who also wanted PR. Its nuts, not business at all and now they lost bcos Google caught them at it. PR is a joke and even after the many hundreds of posts on forums, people will still build the stupid things and keep trading PR.

Ive never searched a general directory and never will. Most are contentless anyway so whats the point in even visiting them. Searchers want more and are very fussy where they search.

General directories are NOT for searchers - their built to take money from other directory submitters. They do not get real searchers and thus are low traffic senders.

are you talking about free or premium directory?

Yes, i am talking about directories.

@highlander, agree with you. People just are crazy behind the PR. PR can only give them the benefit of getting backlinks. Instead of PR one should concentrate on getting visitors and that can be done only via niche directories, the targeted traffic to our niche.
