Should we sponsor wordpress or proxy or such other templates for free release ?

There is an ongoing debate on Wordpress sponsored themes >> WordPress › Extend › Ideas — Remove Sponsored Themes from WordPress.org

Not sure where it will end, but I think they are best avoided at the moment (unless free or very cheap).

Not a good idea. Well of course you can benefit from massive backlinks but at the same time there is risk of irrelevent content.
