Newbie wondering about Indie Merchant programs

I'm here to learn about creating a merchant program.

What is it that really drives you?

Conversion rates?

Overall subject-matter traffic?

Commission rates?

I'm selling books and at the very beginning of this process. I own the titles and can tailor a program from start to finish. Is there a program I should model this on?
