I see lots of posts with a cool signature - a pjrase linked to a site rather than the url itself

Can somebody tell me how to do that

Richard you need to use an HTML link. You need to know how to do this with affiliate text links on your site too. You ALWAYS want descriptive words not a raw link. The words are called "anchor text" and should always be your key words

You make an html link in this format.

<a href="yoursite.com/">Your Keywords Here</a>

So a link to 5 Star would be formatted like this:

<a href="http://www.5staraffiliateprograms.com/">5 Star Affiliate Programs</a>

or
<a href="http://www.5staraffiliateprograms.com/">Find the Best Affiliate Programs</a>

Thats a big thing. If you use "click here" for your anchor link, what good is that? If your niche is about "left handed coat hangers" That is what your anchor text should be. You can mix it up a little once in a while so Google don't think you are being spammy.

You should have a cool and clear signature. That will really help you for your marketing your services.

It took me a while to get figured out with my sig too, im having someone help me get a banner so i can have something better than just text which drives me crazy sometimes!

Yes, I would also love putting up banners to promote my site I have learned recently that people tend to click more on just plain text instead of flashy banners which they find irritating so I just stick with my sig.
