If you can find me evidence that nofollow links are as good as going after high quality, relevant, do follow links I'll listen to the ways of the jedi. :)

The absolutely best tip I have ever seen is to do an Alexa search on your major competitors, check which sites link in to them (because they've probably paid for links!) and then link to your site fro the same places!

How long has the site been live?
Age of a domain is considered important for Google.
How often do you update the site and submit a site map?
Google likes updated pages. They'll visit you more often.
How much content do you have on the site?
Lots of original content helps Google to see you as a more dedicated and trusted source of information. Websites come and go, if you're offering more and putting the work in to update pages and add content it's a better signal to them that you're committed to it.
How many links do you have pointing to your site from dofollow sites with a keyword?

I'm not getting massive traffic from Google right now. In fact I'm barely getting any after four months. But if I do a search on a long tail keyword my site comes up in the first page. And a ll I've done is what is listed above.

hi i have done all this

social bookmarking and networking
press release
article submission
blog commenting
forum posting
classified ads
blog building

but then also my site is not coming for any of the keyword in the 10 ten please suggest what should i do .

As an off page optimizer, I am very much dependent on Link Building. I do regularly directory submission, article submission, bookmarking etc. But our sites ranking is decreasing instead of increasing? we can not understand. Can anybody give me idea?

You have to also consider how competitive your keywords are.

If there are a lot of others out there ranking for a keyword, unless you build up the same kind of reputation and value as them you're not going to reach the top 10.

Dedication is what it takes.

Also, you might have seen that Google are now providing more data about your keywords and search clicks and so on. If you use Google Webmaster Tools (which you should be) you can use that to see how many times your site is appearing for a keyword, where it is positioned, how many times it is clicked etc...

Hi

I have a site that is on the top of the 2nd page of google results.
I update it more than those on the first page.
I have a site map.
The site is made with css etc by a professional so I know it's in order.
The domain is approx 5 years old.

Links wise there aren't many links to the site, but then I've checked link:competitorsite and they don't have many either.

Alot here is said of using blogs etc, but what if the site is for a business which doesn't have blogs relating to it? Should I create an account on other forum sites I use (e.g. this one and other non related forums to my business) and include my link?

What is bookmarking?

Thanks for any advice
