A method you can use if you would see your site go up in the ranking is manual directory submissions. But there’s more to it than you’re aware of. Although the concept is straight forward, all the different factors together, make it complicated and also really time consuming.

To do directory submissions you have to first choose the directories you want to submit to.This list should be quite large as there is not much to gain from only submitting to a couple, your list should include at least 200 web directories. It will be money and time well spent going through the trouble of looking up more specific directories, as those web web directories who cover a broad spectrum might not entirely be what you need for your specific product or service.

One of the things you will be searching for when picking the web directories is if they have a category suitable for your product or service. If you have no idea at all how to start, type ‘web directories’ in the larger search engines, such as Google, ASK and Yahoo look for the names that will come up and start with these.Wikipedia also has a list of general and specialist directories.

It is important the directories you select are SEO friendly.During your search for web directories you will come across directories that are not SEO-friendly, Don't waste your time with them. Your main goal of the entire submission process is to obtain valuable links in the end which will never happen web directories that are not SEO-friendly.It is very important that you verify that the links always go straight to your homepage; links heading to any other page are completely worthless.

Supposing you paid attention to all the previous steps, take your list of selected web directories because it’s time to start the procedure of manual directory submissions. It is very important which category you submit your website under as the directory links will be of less value if they come from an unrelated category.

A manual directory submission means you will have to take the time to complete a form for every directory you wish to submit your site to_On each of those submission forms, you will have to fill in a name, a description, an URL and an email account, and sometimes some additional details depending on the directory you are submitting to.First you will study the guidelines of each directory as they have their own criteria and if you don’t follow them, your submission will be declined with no explanation from the editor of the directory.

There are many ways of payment for directories.Nothing comes for free in this world and the same goes for good web directories but you have a couple of options to choose from.Payments can be made with a one-off payment, an annual payment or a monthly subscription. Why you might want to pay for the submissions, other than the fact that you will get a quick review, is because of the position you will get in the directory. While you can as well go for free submissions, although the reviewing time will be longer, they are free and you can do hundreds of them.

It is vital that you fill out the form as precise as you can and that you make no mistakes. The title often referred to as the name of your web-site, cannot be too long and should at all times be to-the-point.Many people often come up with titles that are to long; generally good titles contain less than 50 characters. In the URL field, you enter your home page address.Web directories will verify your site as well as the content of it.If your domain is not operative or your site lacks content, you can be sure the directories will turn you down.

You will have to write a good description; this field is not to advertise your site but to describe in a neutral way what your site is about. It is a good idea to use the same words people might type into the search box of Google.

Evidently, the directories can’t do anything if you don't give them a name and an email account. In general, directories like email addresses that are linked to your website, so try to avoid using a hotmail account or another free account you might have.

Once you have submitted your site to a directory, it will be reviewed manually by the editor of that directory; so it makes sense that they require manual submissions. To prove that you are doing a manual submission, you will have to enter a code that is to you in the form.

Some web-sites have reciprocal listing options, so when you are filling in the form there is an extra field to be aware of. You need to copy the given link to your own site and then fill out your URL in the ‘reciprocal URL’ on the form.

By now, you probably understand how dull and time consuming this entire submission process can be.Once you have done it, it’s not even guaranteed you will get approval as the site has to go through a manual review and web directories have strict listing guidelines. There are manual directory submission services that can do all the work for you at a much faster speed and reasonable prices.

Sorry but i disagree..

Complete nonsense.. but i guess a good way of getting backlinks to your site..

your best bet is to go with
resellergo.com for $4
or
digixmas.com for $10 and have it on ur desktop

i like and use both.. and they do wonders for any website !

lol

i don't think you read the whole post; point being; this is the reserach digiXmas should be doing to be able to offer you a list that is clean, but they don't, so while you think you get 500 links out of it, 200-300 of them are nofollow, redirects etc. and very low value links.

sure, those 500 links will still improve your rankings, but just a fraction of the improvement you get from a manual submission campaign

in other words; the top-500 manually, then the remaining (low value dirs) you can do semi-automated, as it's indeed very fast.

You need to go through whole post properly before making any statement :coolv:

DON.

yeah your probably right.. i only read first paragraph and got bored :)

exactly, while it's just the explanation, the actual research is even more boring ... which is why most submission services don't actually do the research !!

in other words; 90% of the manual directory submission services will submit your list to a lot of crappy dirs and about 60-70% of the submissions (and so your money) is wasted !!

I honestly believe that there are only 2 services in the world who actually do the research, me and some guy who's 4 times more expensive ... this guy; Info Vilesilencer: The Original SEO Friendly Free Directory List

all the other services are liars and cheaters ... don't waste your time and money with them !!

azeemi,

just to make sure you know what you got yourself into; what MrGamble is talking about are automated directory submissions, do some research to see what other people think about it ...

my 2 baht;
1) the very best directories are protected against automated submissions, so no other way but to do it manually.
2) not every directory has the same value, 1 link of 1 top-directory is worth more then 10 crappy links from 10 crappy directories
3) automated programs mainly submit to crappy directories, not all of them, but most of them
3) the results of automated submissions are much lower, which is not that big of an issue as the program is indeed very fast
4) do both! order manual submissions for the top-500, do the remaining directories automated ...

The best tip of all is to outsource directory submissions. Use a reliable service (most are very cheap). Directory submissions is pretty low-tech as far as SEO strategies go, but can still be worthwhile. It's a numbers game of course.

directory submission have little value now in seo terms

well, yes and no, they surely lost a lot of value as a concept in a whole, there used to be a time that you could do 3.000-5.000 directory submissions and they would give you thousands if indexed links indeed

but about 2 years ago google started to de-index lots of those directories; read the low value directories, poorly maintained directories

but ... I still belive each and every site should do 500 manual directories; those still kept their value; they didn't lose any value, there just less of them left

it's a common thing, just like you would announce your telephone number to the yellow pages when starting a business, same principal; 500 directory submissions for a web site is just a must-do

it will surely take more than that to get top-rankings, but then again; without it it will only be harder ...

cheers,

Michiel
