1. Forum signature links help some but not as much as most people think.
2. Signing up for forums just to get signature links is a waste of your time and everyone else's time. If you have an interest in the topic areas in the forums and have something useful or interesting to contribute, join. If not, it's likely your posts will be removed or signature privileges removed anyway.

Plus the links REALLY won't help much unless they are related to your niche.
So posting in off-topic forums is not very helpful.

I've noticed that sig links (forums) did very well for me last year. However, the last couple months - it looks like Google has finally caught up with this practice.

Despite claims to the contrary, they are definitely "counted". If you doubt that, set up a Google alert for "link:{insert URL for your sig link here}".
The question is how much "juice" to they add to your page/site.

I totally agree with you minstrel - links in your signature line are absolutely counted. How much juice you actually get from them is something that is constantly up for discussion, and for all we know could be always changing. My personal opinion is that they carry a fairly good amount of juice for you, but that is not something that me or anything else is totally sure of I don't think.
Why does anyone need to know how many backlinks they need on a forum to rank higher?
It doesn't matter if your Signature is showing ten thousands times or not,
but as long as the Search Engines see that many people are contribute to the threads that you are in, they will think that it worth to visit it as well, "But Not Necessarily".
On the other hand, posting none-sense junks will be a waste of time for the Search Engines, and Every Body Else...

Hey Web Dev, are you saying that a topic with more replies will get you more link juice for posting in? Just making sure I read your post right as I wasn't totally sure if that's what you meant or not...

I think, I missed couple words on my early response.

If we all were asking ourselves the same type of questions, we will be tempting to just posting in a forum just to get back-links Only.
And that could be Spamming somehow...
But, if we are taking the time to network with other people, contribute something good, and useful threads to the community, Without Thinking How Many Links We Will Need to Rank Higher in The Search Engines, and etc....
It will be very rewarding on the long run... And Success will come as a Bonus.
That just a thought, maybe it's different for some people!

with regard to link building through forum signatures... I think they're ok, but... We all want our link building efforts to look natural and legitimate since that’s what they are. Strategies such as spamming forums will cause more harm than good to your web site.
If 90% of your links come only from forums then this just looks wrong. Do not only use forums to create links to your web site, it will look artificial. You also have to avoid to always use the anchor text to link back to your web site.

Forum links are one part of what should be a varied link profile. Using one link building method will never work. You should be using every legit method you know of.
