Competition vs. Searches

Hey folks,

When researching a niche (and keywords for a niche) what number of searches per month, day, etc. do you think is enough to consider using the niche? How about Competition results for the same niche or keyword? Does anyone have a ball park figure for the top and bottom ends of these?
