Today we're rolling out two new improvements to Google search. The first offers an expanded list of useful related searches and the second is the addition of longer search result descriptions -- both of which help guide users more effectively to the information they need.

This is not an algorithm change. It's a cosmetic change to how search results are displayed under certain conditions.

As Rob said, it may help with click through rates for some sites, if you have a well written meta description tag for each of your pages.

yep, I completely agree with you. If your description is not just keywords and relevant to search query, there are better chances to get a good CTR.

Interesting - I use their analytics, too and for oh, at least a year now I often have "messages" that my descriptions were too short. glad they warned me as I then spent a great deal of time redoing them...now I hope it pays off!

I hope expanded related keywords help the user find a better keyword choice.
And Extended result description will provide user, more information about the page.

Sounds pretty good to me actually. Guess we need to be flexible with changes. Google is so maleable.
