The short answer is yes.
Just remember to think "how can I share valuable content and discussion with others" first, before thinking about promoting links or ad banners in your blog.
As time goes on, you start to link key phrases to valuable recommendations for the user...these can be your affiliate links.
It's a good idea to recommend things that you have actually consumed or used yourself...so you truly can wholeheartedly recommend the product or service. Also, that allows you to write review posts that are focused on that particular item.
Be honest with reviews, good or bad...and mix both good and bad reviews into your blog.
That should get you started.
