Once you start ranking for this by getting links with the same anchor text, get more links pointing to the page saying "black widgets" and it will be easier to get...
I think that sums it up really. Lots of different domains linking to your site with optimised anchor texts. Don't overdo it so it doesn't look artificial. Officially it is called "Natural" search engine optimisation ;)
from an SEO perspective subdomains are generally seen as seperate to the main domain so it would be better to build content on the same domain with a good folder structure:
domain.com/niche rather than niche.domain.com
