Google probably thinks everyone will ease up on building links if they don't see their PR going up!

Google felt webmasters were putting too much importance on PR.

it was basicly showing webmasters how well they were cheating google no wonder it was pulled, clearly as one of the above members have stated it rewards you for buying and trading links, something you're not really supposed to do. but, on the other hand, it has worsened the obsession of certain webmasters

I would like it to be a small technique bug for Google.
We need it and of course we could get it from other channels.

If they are pulling the plug, how come my google tool bar still shows PR ranking for websites e.g. BBC PR 9.

I think they're keen to stop site owners from paying so much attention to PR. While PR does still have importance, I'd suggest that visible, toolbar PR no longer has much value at all, if any.
