I dont use any pinging service site. I simply ad the pinging service urls on m wordpress's writing setting and let wordpress do it automatically. Whenever a new post is published, wordpress will automatically ping the new url for me.
Yes, I still use Pingler. Did so just this morning with an old blog that I still update occasionally. Does it help? I've no real idea but I don't think it does much. My pageviews have been pretty consistent for a long time now. Increases have been gradual. I figure that pinging won't hurt and might help. It costs nothing, so nothing to lose.
