What proxy rotation strategy works best for large-scale campaign data collection?

Hey all,

Been doing a lot of market research lately – scraping ad creatives, tracking competitor landers, and pulling pricing data for affiliate offers. The problem isn’t the scraping itself, it’s keeping the proxies alive long enough to get meaningful data.

I started with datacenter IPs, but they get blocked or served CAPTCHAs within hours, especially if I’m hitting big ad networks or eCommerce sites. Switched to residential, which helped, but I still ran into issues if I didn’t manage rotation properly.

Here’s what I’ve learned after a few messy attempts:

  • Request-level rotation beats session-level – If you rotate only per session, each IP still sends dozens or hundreds of requests in a short time. That pattern is easy to detect. Rotating every request (or every few requests) spreads the load across a much larger pool and looks more like organic traffic.
  • Don’t max out concurrency – Yes, high concurrency speeds up the job, but each IP has a limit. I found that keeping it under 10–15 concurrent requests per IP, even with residential, reduces bans significantly. Spreading the load across more IPs is safer than pushing a few to their limit.
  • City-level targeting matters more than you think – When I’m comparing regional offers, I need data from specific cities. If my proxy resolves to a different city, the pricing or creative often differs, which skews the research. So I always pin to the exact city I’m targeting.
  • Mix in mobile and desktop residential IPs – Some platforms treat mobile IPs more leniently. If your provider offers both, it’s worth alternating to reduce fingerprinting.
I’ve been testing a service called Pxyedge recently – they have a massive pool (80M+ IPs) with city-level precision and request-level rotation built in. Their concurrency handling is solid, so I don’t have to throttle too much. Not shilling, just saying it’s worked better than my previous provider for this specific use case.

What about you guys? How do you handle proxy rotation for large data pulls – do you stick with session-based or go full request-level? Any unexpected blockers you’ve run into?
 
Don't reinvent the wheel. For large volumes, just use residential proxies with rotation on a per-request basis. If you need cookies or authentication for scraping

Bcs data center IPs get banned quickly at this scale. And i can tell u don’t try to write your own rotator =) get a pool from a reputable provider that automatically rotates IPs on their end. This will save you a ton of time and stress. That’s it.
