What do you do with your extra domains?

I have a couple of domain names related to my current niche. Basically, I came up with a better name after registering, so I need to figure out what to do with the other ones.

Do you point them all to your main domain with a 301 redirect?

Do you use them to feed traffic to your main domain, as a landing page, perhaps?

Do you develop sub-brands or mini-sites relevant to your niche and borrow content from your main site?

If I want to develop them later on, because they are a viable sub-niche, does any one of the above strategies hurt in some way?

I am trying -really trying- to keep myself from complicating my idea. It's not working!

Do you know if there's any kind of penalty to redirect to the mother site?

No, no penalty. But you won't benefit from it much either. It's really only useful if you have links to one of the old domains (including old pages in search listings that no longer exist) that you want redirected to the new one.
