Depending on the density, competition, and popularity, getting traffic can be about much more than just optimizing your website, itself. Backlinks no longer carry the weight that they used to but are still relevant.
What has been working for me in a big way, is youtube and vimeo videos which link directly to my related sites. For example, I made a video demonstrating how to use a program and then showed a really cool plugin (that happened to be my affiliate page on my site). Now, when someone does a search for that program, my video pops up and I get a consistent stream of traffic and a solid conversion rate.
