Nice that Linus Torvalds of the Open Source Development Labs was recognized by a mainstream business publication like BusinessWeek for his managerial prowess. It's got him ranked right up there with the CEOs of GE, PepsiCo, Xerox, and DreamWorks SKG, among others, and this is good to see.

It was also good to note Hector Ruiz of AMD and Henning Kagermann of SAP among the publication's 17 honorees. Come to think of it, ITMJ should have its own list of Best and Worst IT Managers of 2004. Since we cover the information technology world like a blanket every day, we notice when a company -- thus, its management -- is breaking new ground, saying interesting things, and satisfying its investors.
So here, in no particular order, are our choices for Top Five IT Managers of the Year 2004 A.D. (Okay, so we're a bit more selective than other publications.):
# Linus Torvalds, OSDL: All-around excellent leadership.
# Larry Ellison, Oracle: Made PeopleSoft cry "uncle."
# Hector Ruiz, AMD: Made huge gains versus Intel.
# Michael Robertson, Linspire: Dell deal showed real leadership.
# John Roberts, SugarCRM: Brought new perspective to a market in desperate need of it.
Oh, and those Google guys (Sergei Brin and Larry Page) made some good decisions, too. Technically, that makes seven. Congrats to all!
