If there's other old sites with the same name, when ya search for the site name it always pulls up that old one. Do ya reckon the new site needs to switch names or what?

Explain the particulars?

for google:

site:'example.com' EXACT to see if it's indexed.

If the name is only similar: If you do not use the site:Match operator, you will get the top ranked site that contains that name first perhaps.

Do you own the other site? Was it not renewed so it is not on a server now?

There can never be two websites with the same Domain name. Domain names are unique. The extensions do matter.

Simply index your website on google by using "google search console" . You can type the phrase on Google like that. Then add your site information, and add sitemaps.

If your site is on WordPress, ensure to untick the checkbox or mark that says "Discourage search engines from indexing this site". I think you can find that on "Settings".

Once you have done all these, within a few days, Google bots will crawl your site and within few weeks, your site will be picked up by Google.

Yes there can. The old site was indexed and when you moved the domain or redeveloped it you did not request (or wait ) for the new domain server or update to be indexed by Google.

Google makes up their own rules. www.example.com and example.com are not the same domain to Googlebot ... Technically you are right however www. is a subdomain. Domain names are unique to one registrant only. 2nd level. 1st level. string -> www. example. com

So, if myexample.com is yours and example.com is the best ranked ....

Another thing that can get the ball rolling: Is to add a new Google Analytics tag for the new domain (assuming that it is new). In a few days Googlebot will begin indexing a new domain tagged as such.
