Google Analytics - Traffic Source Help

I need some clarity on the traffic source (direct) ((none)). I assume this is people just entering the URL manually into their browser?

Does anyone know what this is exactly? This is usually my third or fourth biggest traffic source across several sites and I cannot imagine that this much traffic comes from people just entering my URL manually and where are they finding it? Make sense?

I've wondered about that too. I think direct probably is direct type in traffic.
I wonder if "none" is largely spiders? I'm not sure though.

Oh I did not even think about the significance of the (none), maybe it is spiders, because it always appears in high numbers and across all my sites. You'd think G can put in a filter to block spiders????
