Capturing Emails to Build a List Through PPV

Was anyone of you successful in building an own list through PPV?

I'm trying it right now with Aweber and Double Opt-In. I'm offering a free ebook, but conversion rate is very low, so that I'm paying more than 5$ per email-address, which seems way too high for me.

There was a case study earlier this year where somebody was list building with PPV. His leads were costing less than 20 cents. Search for it

Costs are about 10 cents/mail with different traffic sources. That's about 10x cheaper than what it costs me to get a single-optin email address...
