AI Overviews SEO Guide in Affiliate marketing - Direct information from Google

Mainly first question we need to answer: Is SEO Still Relevant in the Age of AI Search?

- Absolutely yes!

Despite the rapid rise of AI-powered search experiences, traditional SEO remains the foundation of online visibility. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are not separate search engines—they rely heavily on Google's existing ranking systems, search index, and quality signals.

This means that if your website is not crawlable, indexable, and capable of ranking organically, it is unlikely to become a trusted source for AI-generated answers.

In many ways, what marketers now call "AEO" (Answer Engine Optimization) or "GEO" (Generative Engine Optimization) is simply an evolution of SEO rather than a replacement for it. Especially in white and black hat seo ;)

Traditional SEO Is the Foundation of AI Visibility

Before focusing on AI-specific strategies, make sure the basics are covered.

Your content should be accessible to search engines, properly indexed, and supported by a solid technical structure.
- Robots.txt directives,
- canonical tags,
- XML sitemaps,
- internal linking,
- mobile usability continue to play a major role in how Google discovers and understands your pages.

If Google cannot effectively process your content through traditional search systems, AI-generated search features will have very little reason to reference it.

Create Content for Humans First

One of the most important concepts behind modern search is Google's emphasis on helpful, people-first content.

AI systems are becoming increasingly effective at identifying content that genuinely solves problems versus content created solely to rank for keywords. The most successful pages are those that provide practical value, answer real questions, and demonstrate expertise through original insights or firsthand experience.

Instead of asking:

"How can I rank for this keyword?"

Ask:

"How can I provide the best answer available on the internet?"

That mindset aligns perfectly with both traditional SEO and AI-powered search.

Answer Questions Clearly and Completely

AI systems thrive on clear information. When users search, Google may break a query into multiple subtopics before generating a response. Content that thoroughly covers a subject often performs better than content focused on a single narrow keyword variation.

For example, instead of publishing separate articles targeting:

  • Best VPN
  • Best VPN for Netflix
  • Best VPN for Security
  • Best VPN for Streaming

A comprehensive guide covering all major aspects of VPN selection may provide stronger topical signals and become a more valuable resource for AI systems to cite.

The goal is to build complete resources rather than collections of fragmented articles.

Structure Content for Easy Extraction

AI models prefer information that is easy to understand and reference.
Well-structured articles naturally increase the likelihood of being used in AI-generated summaries. Clear headings, logical content hierarchy, concise explanations, and occasional use of bullet points make information easier to process.

Compare these two approaches:

Weak example;

VPNs have become increasingly popular over the years because internet privacy concerns continue to grow among consumers and businesses alike...

Stronger example;

A VPN encrypts your internet traffic and hides your IP address, improving online privacy and security.

The second version immediately answers the question and provides information that can be quoted or summarized with minimal effort.

Demonstrate Expertise and Trust

Google's quality systems increasingly reward content created by people who understand the topics they write about.

This is where E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) becomes important.

Websites can strengthen these signals by:
  • Publishing expert-written content.
  • Showcasing author credentials.
  • Referencing reliable sources.
  • Sharing original research and case studies.

The more evidence you provide that your content is trustworthy and based on genuine knowledge, the more likely it is to be viewed as a reliable source for both traditional rankings and AI-generated responses.

Brand Signals Are Becoming More Important

In black hat SEO backlinks remain valuable, but they are no longer the only indicator of authority.

Modern search systems also evaluate broader trust signals such as brand mentions, reviews, industry references, community discussions, and overall online reputation.

As AI search continues to evolve, strong brands are likely to receive greater visibility because they provide confidence that information comes from a trustworthy source.

In other words, SEO and branding are becoming increasingly interconnected.

Final Thoughts

AI-powered search is changing how information is presented, but it is not changing the core principles of SEO.

The websites that win in AI Overviews are typically the same websites that perform well in traditional search: they publish helpful content, demonstrate expertise, maintain strong technical foundations, and build trust over time.

When it comes to Google Search, you can ignore tactics like snippets, creating unnecessary AI text files (e.g., llms.txt), and looking for unnatural quotes.

Instead of trying to optimize specifically for artificial intelligence, focus on creating the most useful resource available for your audience.

If your content consistently provides better answers than competitors, both search engines and AI systems will have a reason to reference it.

If you have reached this point, what has been your personal experience with adapting to AEO guidelines? Feel free to discuss :)

Just wanted to defend AI in web dev for a second. Obviously, it’s not a good fit for huge websites — managing that codebase is a nightmare, and you need a CMS. But for landing pages? Claude or Cursor agents can generate totally clean HTML, CSS, JS, and PHP. As for content, it plugs in your text perfectly or rewrites existing stuff easily. Sure, if you're trying to replicate a designer’s custom layout, it’s usually quicker to do it yourself than to waste time explaining every tiny detail to the AI. But for landings and whites, it saves an insane amount of time

I just stick to solid SEO basics, then let AI features work in my favor. Good content, clear structure, and helpful answers still give me steady traffic and conversions.
