Although I've never sold through ClickBank, I do advertise different offers there quite a bit. They have tons of different affiliates so they might be a good option!
There are probably bigger risks in those who affiliate market by emailing and similar methods, as opposed to those who affiliate market through their websites and SEO/SEM
I agree that it's important to target your audience. Unless you have a broad product that lots of people use (for example...Shoes, T-Shirts, Cars..etc) then it can be difficult. Viral marketing is great if your product targets a large audience though!
My vote has to go with Wordpress. The amount of plugins, themes and just overall support from searching online makes them my favorite..It also makes things much most customizable!
