Yeah, building a strategy based primarily on articles turned out to be somewhat disastrous after the new Panda update. A diverse "portfolio" of links is still the way to go...time-consuming though it may be.
I certainly can't verify that there's NO duplicate content penalty, but there's absolutely no question that you can rank in Google with more than one blog that has duplicate articles.
