So you want to optimise for a general niche, am I getting it right? Or you say you have multiple products from multiple domains, like furniture, toys, smartphones etc? :)
It is all about keyword research! If you produce blue widgets that you want to sell in US/Europe it's quite an easy task: do keyword research, build a website on those keywords, SEO it and watch customers coming and buying your product. :)
I think it's all about the numbers...you do not submit to only 2-3 directories but to 1k or 2k...with a 5-10% acceptance rate you get 100 links or so, one-way..not so useless now
