google is not meant to be to good if javascript is disabled or at least that was the case. I had 2 counters on my page as a test and statcounter always counted the hits and showed if people where clicking on ads etc, google missed quite a few which was also proven as adsense matched with what...
See if you can hunt around for some free voucher codes. Think there's one for adwords at the moment for new sign ups, try find the voucher then sign up.
I think if you are leaning towards buying a business you should go that way.
Setting up can be cumbersome and you will probably come across loads of annoying things that you never thought you would have to do in the first place.
I think more so why choosing to buy in your case is because...
Build back links - That will be the best way. Try write articles for article sites and submit to more than one. Submit original articles to all of them and make sure they a properly linked back to specific pages on your website.
ie if the article you submit is about passing link it to a page...
I agree, theres are whole market of silver surfers that has to be explored... and they dont only want to look at sites relating to WW2
(guess if we bothered to listen we could find out what they really want)
I think you have to be careful with free web hosting sometimes these guys over subscribe themselves and if they go bust you could just loose all your valuable information.
Support is a big issue too, I host with host gator and get access to over 2500 templates.
I prefer statcounter, probably because I started out using it. Tried google's urchin but found it too weird. Think they also didn't count stats where users had JavaScript disabled. Not sure if still like that.
Statcounter has updated their script so you can monitor your exit link activity...
