I always try to write as many as i can. I also avoid putting the same article on more than 1 directory so it's unique. I guess the amount of articles you need to do depends on your link building strategy and the competitiveness of the niche.
I don't think it will have any effect in terms of SE value, but if you use a good 'pitch' in your sig then it could encourage people to go to your site.
If you really are dead set on increasing your PR, getting good quality high PR backlinks is a great way to start. I wouldn't focus too much on it though tbh.

Go get some backlinks, submit your site to webmaster tools and make sure the on page optimisation is up to scratch. A combination of good links and quality content will get you up there.

Attention: "role based name" email prefixes such as support, webmaster, info, contact, forum, service, affiliate, admin, traffic, partners, marketing, etc., for our member accounts are not permitted. They are acceptable for a vendor listing, but not for the member email. This is due to bulk email processors scrubbing them for delivery due to extremely high bounce rates. Please apply for membership using a personalized email prefix. Something like bob@xxxxx.com.
If we discover you signed up with a role based name we will give you only one message to change it. After 3 days your account will be removed if the email is not changed.
