Nofollowed links don't count as backlinks for the purposes of page rank calculation. That's the whole point. Google drops them from the link graph.
You'll still see them reported as backlinks - on Yahoo Site Explorer and Google Webmaster Tools, etc, but they are not contributing to your ranking.
Just submit and forget. It can take months, even years to get into Dmoz. There used to be a forum where you could ask Dmoz editors about the progress of your listing (haven't checked it out recently) and that could sometimes help, but there's just not enough editors.
PageRank is increased by getting links from higher PR pages than yours, or by getting a lot of lower PR links (the amount needed to increase your PR goes up with each PR score, and its logarithmic).
But don't worry too much about PageRank, not the Toolbar PageRank anyway. It's only one of many...

I particularly like the tip about revisiting your lenses and adding new content. I bet most authors wouldn't even think of that. A great Squidoo lens should be a work in progress, like a Wikipedia page.
Reciprocal links don't do much for rankings but might be great for direct traffic. They also help your overall link profile. Google expects to see some reciprocal links - it's very natural looking. Just stay in your industry/market/theme .
Contextual links are what you should seek out first. Failing that, a link on a homepage can be good (homepages usually pass more link juice) but be careful how and where it's placed. Surrounding text (before and after your anchor text link) can help improve the quality of a link, for example.
All depends on the keywords your targetting. But in my experience, if you're targetting commercial phrases/competitive terms, age plays a major role.
