I still think unless you have a damned good reason, such as a list, more than 100 links would just make the page look a mess, in fact, with the exception of menus I personally wouldn't have more than 5-10, but that's just from an aesthetics perspective.
If you are using WP, use one of the SEO add ons too, this can make quite a bit of difference in your organic listings. the old classic is Easy SEO, but I am experimenting with a newer one Craigs SEO Add On, this seems even better (although it's early days yet)
I learnd the exact same lesson with SEO a few years back, bought the book, read it, didn't think too much of it, bought another, that was pretty poor too, so ended up learning most of it from trial and error, although some errors were other peoples which were discussed in the forums.
