I setup a photography page on facebook 3 yrs ago and it was all going well until the facebook owners decided I had to pay for everyone to see my work. Are there better sites around?
Best advice I can give here is look at sites that are doing well and try to understand the structure and how the content is presented. Only then will you truely understand the ways of the expert designer.
The true answer to this surely has to be your site has to be worth it? Google algorithms are getting better by the update and making poor sites work is getting more difficult don't you all think?
Its up to yourself really but I would read a little on marketing... There is plenty of information out there on the internet and if you can write fairly well there is no reason why you can't do much of the marketing yourself. Paying for these services can be costly and will not necessarily bring...
I think the answer really is whether or not A) you can design something yourself and B) How quickly you want to get going. In the main I generally start with a free template and then over time replace it with something designed to my needs. Hope that helps :)
