I read a story yesterday of a guy that had a blogger account and built lots of mini sites and he got between $1 - $10 per day from each of them.
He was making $20,000 a month in total and then one day he went to his account and all his sites were...
I would just add...
1. Make sure that you cloak all your affiliate links.
2. Track all your visitors
If you don't know how to do these things or don't know what I'm talking about then post here and we will tell/show you.

There is no need to have one over the other, combine the two.
Recurring on hosting is obviously great as someone has already mentioned.
I go for the highest commission when the products are one off payments.
I also promote some really high end products where the payout...

Buying a domain name is very cheap, search google, note the prices are not the same.
