Why would the french use english words - or any other non-english speaking country. Most of them are very proud of their own language. Plus, you'd have to optimise your content so that they can understand it too - no use marketing in .fr if you only have english content.

SEO requires on-page and off-page optimization.
Giving you the basics of SEO will take a lot of time, so I'd suggest you start Googling for "What is SEO" and then working yourself up from there. Or, you can just get someone to do it for you ;)

I agree with leofixer. One way would be to use blog/forum comments and posts with your website URL in the sig somewhere. Obviously there are certain rules here, such as posting only in relevant places (ie. don't promote sex toys on a relationship forum) and also posting useful comments.
Woogley: SEO is basically done on-site and off-site. A fair or good knowledge of HTML will be of good use to you as well as some writing skills. Do a Google search on organic SEO for tips.

Sorry to say, but a number 1 spot on the SERPs won't really bring you any conversions. If you've got the traffic but aren't making the sale, then you need to revise the copy on your website. Let me know if this helps.
