As minstrel said, having your keyword in your domain name is a bonus but it's not absolutely necessary. You can still make up for it by other means, such as choosing good anchor texts for incoming links.
As some people already said, you gotta love your niche. Otherwise, what you write about will not be good and people will be turned off by what they read.
I agree that Internet marketing isn't like how it was a few years ago. It's much more competitive because of many more people doing it. But as others said, there still is some potential in the field because people will always need to buy products.
I just started out in Afffiliate Marketing so I can't really answer this question. But I've heard of people who had to waste thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours until they got to where they are making loads of money. :)

I joined this forum to learn more about IM while meeting new people. I'm quite a newbie so I have a long way to go. I hope to be a valuable member of this community.

Attention: "role based name" email prefixes such as support, webmaster, info, contact, forum, service, affiliate, admin, traffic, partners, marketing, etc., for our member accounts are not permitted. They are acceptable for a vendor listing, but not for the member email. This is due to bulk email processors scrubbing them for delivery due to extremely high bounce rates. Please apply for membership using a personalized email prefix. Something like bob@xxxxx.com.
If we discover you signed up with a role based name we will give you only one message to change it. After 3 days your account will be removed if the email is not changed.
